Schools have been back in session in Alabama and it's a shirtshow down here

Schools that vowed to not have masked just implemented mask mandates because the ICU's in ALabama and Mississippi are full. No beds. There are 10's of thousands of students quarantined due to exposure. I think the school leadership knew what would happen but they knew what the response would be if they implemented controls ahead of time. So they had to let the trainwreck happen before they would do anything about it.

The virus spreads in the schools and spreads to the people that are vulnerable. In a place that has low vaccination rates, opening schools back up with only social distancing attempted has been a disaster. Powering through is not an answer. If I get in a car wreck now and need an ICU, I'm potentially screwed. Which is never a good feeling.
